CWA of NSW contributes $500,000 to flood relief efforts in devastated communities

The Country Women’s Association (CWA) of NSW is providing $500,000 in financial assistance for communities impacted by devastating flooding in the past few months. 

The donations are from the CWA of NSW Disaster Relief Fund, which was established to assist with recovery efforts in instances of disasters like this. The Fund has recently been used to support a range of relief activities during the prolonged drought and catastrophic bushfires.

Under the most recent allocation for flood relief:
• $200,000 will go to GIVIT to support the provision of essential household support items including vouchers and other household needs;
• $100,000 to Foodbank NSW/ACT for the provision, freight and distribution of food hampers;
• $50,000 for Northern Rivers Women and Children’s Services Inc. for outreach workers to provide essential necessities in a range of circumstances, particularly for women dealing with family and domestic violence matters.
• CWA of NSW branches in affected communities will also be eligible to receive vouchers for household items that can be distributed in their local areas.

“The scale of the flooding that has hit towns and cities in the state’s Northern Rivers and along our coast has been unlike anything we’ve seen in recent times and the impact it’s had on residents has shocked and saddened us all,” said CWA of NSW President Stephanie Stanhope.

“People have had their lives turned upside down, losing homes, businesses and critical community infrastructure, and sadly a number of people lost their lives during the disaster. What we have seen, too, is the amazing spirit from these communities who have stood up and rallied around those who have been most affected, so the least we feel we can do is offer financial aid that can further assist in getting people back on their feet and back to some type of normality.

“Our partners in this - GIVIT, Foodbank and Northern Rivers Women and Children’s Services – are recognised for their expertise in helping people requiring urgent assistance and we thank them for their support in getting this money where it’s needed most.”
